Ventru™ is a Philadelphia-based company founded in 2022 as a spin-out of the Penn Center for Innovation (PCIV), dedicated to revolutionizing neurosurgical care by addressing the challenges associated with intraventricular access procedures.
The founders include Rachel Blue, MD and Michael Spadola, MD, both of whom are chief residents of neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania, and Bryan Humbarger, a 20+ year medical device commercial veteran working for companies including Medtronic, HeartFlow, and most recently Eko Health. Drs. Blue and Spadola invented this guide after facing the significant issues related to intraventricular access early in their neurosurgical training. Determined to improve patient care, they developed the DIVE Guide™ to provide clinicians with a safer and more accurate method for ventriculostomy. |

Globally, the incidence of brain disorders and injuries is on the rise. Conditions such as ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, and bacterial meningitis are becoming increasingly prevalent. These conditions often require neurosurgical intervention, including the placement of external ventricular drains (EVDs) to manage intracranial pressure. Currently, freehand techniques using anatomical landmarks have a variable success rate as low as 40%, requiring multiple catheter passes. Additionally, existing devices are cumbersome, non-adjustable, require a large incision, and have a tendency to allow catheter migration following placement.

Ventru's novel Device for Intraventricular Entry (DIVE Guide™) assists surgeons with the safe placement of drains for patients suffering from hydrocephalus. The DIVE Guide™ offers a fixed orthogonal trajectory for catheter placement, a low-profile footplate to secure the skin, and a catheter clip for added stability. With this innovative device, clinicians can achieve single-pass catheter placement, reducing the risk of complications associated with inaccurate placement and multiple passes.
